Buddha

1) The “What Buddhists Believe” 9-Friday course, 8.30pm to 10.00pm at SJBA Shrine Hall is still in progress. The course is based on the book “What Buddhist Believe” by the late Chief Reverend Dr. K Sri Dhammananda.

The topic this Friday, 28 June  is  “Nature of the World” by Uncle Vijaya.

The topic next Friday, 5 July is “The Re-Discovered Path” by Bro. Tan Siang Chye.

2) In conjunction with the country’s 62nd Merdeka Day on 31st August 2019 (Saturday), SJBA will present Academic Excellence Awards to students who have excelled in their examinations in 2018.  Application is now open to students who have excelled in the following examinations: 

       

            (a) (i)  UPSR                              – SK  :  5 As

                                                                SJK :  6 As & above

                 (ii)  PT3                                 – 7 As & above (excluding lisan & oral)

                 (iii) SPM                                –  8 As & above

                 (iv)  STPM (or equivalent)   –  3 As & above

3) SJBA invite you and family and friends to a spiritual and mentally enriching morning at this Sunday’s Buddha Puja commencing at 9.15am with offering of lights, flowers and incense to the Buddha, chanting, Dhamma Talk by Venerable Dr. Dhammapala and Sharing of Merits. 

Venerable Dr. Dhammapala graduated in Pali and Buddhist Studies from the University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka and received his Doctorate from the University of Hong Kong. He has been lecturing in the University of Hong Kong and presented a number of papers. He is the Spiritual Director of Buddhistdoor and Vice Chairman of the Hong Kong University of Buddhist Studies Alumini Association. He is now the Abbot of Brahmavihara Monastery & Retreat Centre, Melaka.

1) During the Vassa Period, Ven. Indarathana will lead in chanting the Dhammacakkappavattana every day, 7.30pm to 8.15pm. On Tuesdays, the chanting will followed by Pali Chanting & Sutta Study.

2) All devotees are welcome to our Monday Metta Meditation session at SJBA Meditation Hall from 8.30pm to 9.45pm. This cultivation of metta focus on loving kindness to oneself, loved ones and all other beings. On every 1st Monday, our Resident Monk will be guiding the meditators especially the newcomers.

3) There will be Day Retreat in SJBA during New Moon and Full Moon Days from 9am to 5pm. The Retreat is free and easy and participants can feel free to join in or leave any time. Vegetarian lunch will be provided.

4) SJBA is organising “What Buddhist Believe” – a course on the fundamental concepts of Buddhism over 9 consecutive Thursdays, beginning 3rd August 2017. This course will be based on the book of the same title, written by our late chief Ven K. Sri Dhammananda Nayaka Thero. As such, participants are encouraged to read this book prior to attending, to get a better understanding. To participate, please register with Sister Lily at SJBA Office.

5) SJBA is celebrating our country’s 60th Merdeka Day on 31st August 2017 (Thursday). The Celebration will start with a Merdeka Breakfast at 7.45am, followed by Flag Raising Ceremony, Blessings by the Venerable Monks, cutting of Merdeka cake and fellowship. Members and devotees are invited to join us for the Celebration. To encourage our members’ children to strive for excellence in their academic performance, SJBA will present Academic Excellence Awards to students who excelled in their examinations in 2016. image0011. In conjunction with the 7th Lunar Month, SJBA is organising a Pattidana (Dedication of Merits) Ceremony on this Sunday, 23 August 2015 for the departed ones. When those departed relatives and friends, who may been reborn in certain unfortunate state of existence, become aware that their departed relatives performing meritorious deeds dedicated to them, they can feel relief. If they rejoice repeatedly, their unhappy birth can be transformed into a happy one. It is the duty of relatives to perform acts of merits for the departed ones. The program will start at 8.00am with the offering of flowers, candles and pure water, followed by Pindacara, chanting, Dhamma Talk, offering of requisites, dedication of merits to the departed ones and followed by Blessings by the Sangha and lunch dana. All are welcome to partake in this Pattidana

In conjunction with the 58th Merdeka Day Celebration in SJBA on 31 August 2013 and to encourage our members’ children to strive for excellence in their academic performance, SJBA will present Academic Excellence Awards to students who excelled in their examinations in 2014. The Awards will be given out on Merdeka Day, 31 August 2015.
On the same day, SJBA is also organizing a Blessings Service for students sitting for UPSR, PT3, SPM, STPM, etc. examinations this year. The Blessings will be conducted by the Venerable Sangha Members.

5. SJBA Youth Section is organising a Temple Building Fund-Raising “Lose to win” Campaign. This is a 2-months fitness campaign that offers an unique way to lose weight whilst raising funds. Upon signing up, the participants will have to come to SJBA on 31st August 10 a.m. to weigh in and record their details. Throughout the campaign, the participants are to do their best to lose weight and finally asked to weigh in again at the end of the program. The weight difference between the start and the end of the program will be converted into donation by the friends of the participants as pledged during the sign up period. 5. SJBA is making the invitation to Venerable Mahacara on 1st August 2015, Monday, 8.30pm to enter Vassa (Rains Retreat) in SJBA. The program will include taking the 3 Refuges and observe the 5 Precepts, formal invitation to Venerable Mahacara to stay in SJBA for the 3-month Vassa, determination by the Venerable, offering of robes and requisites to the Sangha followed by chanting and sharing of merits. Members and devotees are invited to witness this Vassa Entry Ceremony.

Members and devotees are also invited to participate in the 5th Day Vassa Chanting on 5th August 2015, Wednesday, 7.30pm, to commemorate the day the Buddha taught the Anattalakkhana Sutta to His first 5 disciples of the Buddha who had by listening to this sermon, meditating on the five aggregates of clinging and realizing the higher stages of supramundane knowledge that lead them to the attainment of Arahantship.

6. This Sunday (19/7/15, 10.00am) Dhamma Talk (in English) is on “Kamma” by Bro Mui Han. Bro Mui Han has been a Buddhist since the age of 13. He started active Buddhist work in his secondary school Buddhist Society. He was the President of St. John’s Institution Buddhist Society KL from 1993 – 1997. His other appointments include EDSG Director in Persatuan Buddhis UPM (PBUPM) in 1999/2000 and were a member of the first Nalanda Buddhist Society, Serdang (NBS) committee in 2003/2004, Committee member of Buddhist Missionary Society Malaysia (BMSM) Youth Section (2006-2010) and member of Aloka Foundation Management Committee (2008-2010).

Mui Han also co-founded a youth group in 1998 and was later formalize to be known as Dhammaduta Youths (D2Y) in 2000. D2Y have been running annual year-end Buddhist camps for secondary school students since 1998 till today. D2Y seeks contemporary ways of understanding the sublime Buddhist teachings through total engagement with youths. In experimenting with various forms of media (including an accapella choir group), D2Y challenges Buddhist Youths today to re-evaluate their principles in living, a competitive
and challenging world today.

7. This Sunday’s Dhamma Talk in Mandarin (19/7/15 11.30am) is off and will
resume on 26 July 2015.

5. This Sunday (12/7/15, 9.45am) Dhamma Talk (in English) will be given by Bro Tan Siang Chye. The topic is “A Morning of Contemplation – Upajjhatthana Sutta”. Bro. Siang Chye graduated from Kent Institute, UK and with a Master degree from Massey University, New Zealand. He was a former Chairman of the Buddhist Missionary Youth Section and also the parent body, BMSM for one session. He is a striving meditator and has practised under several prominent meditation teachers locally and in New Zealand. Bro. Siang Chye is currently the Chairman of the Dhamma Committee of SJBA.

6. This Sunday’s Dhamma Talk in Mandarin (12/7/15 11.30am) is on “Inspirational Stories” by Sis Tan Yee Yong. Sis Tan Yee Yong graduated with Bachelor of Science in Computer Sience and MBA. She obtained MA in Buddhist Studies from IBC, Thailand. She is now a Dhamma committee member of SJBA.

image0011.      SJBA’s building extension (a new 4-storey block with basement) officially commenced works on 8 March 2015. Piling work has already been completed and excavation works for the basement are in progress now. The cost of construction of the new building is RM5 million. To-date, we have received donations of about RM 2.88 million (with another RM216,000 in pledges, not collected). We appeal for help to raise the balance in order for us to successfully complete the construction of the new building by June 2016 (contractual completion date).

Sis Imee Ooi of “The Chant of Metta” fame as well as many other highly-praised musical works will be making a live appearance in her debut concert. A teacher, composer, producer, director and singer, Imee is serving the Dhamma with her extraordinary talent and voice. She is a Buddhist practitioner that adheres to the teachings of loving kindness, peace and harmony. Founder of IMM Musicworks in 1997, she has released more than 50 albums and has produced many musical works for many Buddhist societies and organizations. Her mission is in singing messages of peace, harmony and compassion or simply bringing healing sounds to her listeners through music.

You can now have the opportunity to support the development of local Buddhist musical talents and performance arts as well as contributing to the building extension of SJBA Vihara. Tickets are now available in SJBA (at RM100, RM150, RM200, RM250 and RM350).

5.      This Sunday (5/7/15, 9.45am) Dhamma Talk (in English) will be given by Ven. Sayadaw Nyanapurnik. Sayadaw Nyanapurnik is a Nepalese Monk of Sakyan descent. He is a Pali Scholar and Vipassana teacher, and has been working actively for the progress and development of Theravada Buddhism in Nepal. Ordained at the age of 10, he has studied the Dhamma extensively in Nepal and Myanmar. He received the ‘Sasanadhaja Dhammachariya”, a highly respected order of Buddhist monastic education in Myanmar in 1963. He is currently the Deputy Sanghanayaka of Nepal.

2) SJBA is hosting a Dhamma Talk “The Importance of Practising Daily Meditation” by Sayalay Susila, on 30 Aug 2014, Saturday, 8.30pm to 10pm. Sayalay Susila, a Malaysian, was ordained in 1991. She has practiced meditation intensively, under the guidance of various famous meditation teachers like Sayadaw U Pandita, Pa Auk Sayadaw, etc. She has also learned the Abhidhamma, ancient discourses and the Pali language from Pa Auk Sayadaw. Sayadaw Susila travelled extensively to teach meditation, the Abhidhamma and Sutta expositions.

3) In conjunction with the Mid-Autumn Festival, SJBA is organizing a Mooncake Family Night on Saturday, 6th September 2014. It will be a fun-filled night to celebrate with your family, especially so if you have young children as SNOWBALL THE CLOWN is around to entertain you with magic show and ventriloquism with his puppets. And in line with SJBA’s effort in promoting a caring and compassionate community, we are inviting underprivileged children from Ti-Ratana Welfare Society to join us in our celebration. These 40 underprivileged children have provided us with a wish-list. Last but not least, remember to bring your lantern along for the traditional lantern procession round the temple to end the night. DINNER WILL BE

The course will run for 6 consecutive Fridays from 8.30pm to 10.00pm and will be conducted by Uncle Vijaya, Bro Charlie Chia and Dr Chan Kah Yein. 5) In conjunction with the 3-month Vassa, Venerable Dhammapala will be conducting a Pali Sutta learning and Chanting in Pali & English on Tuesdays (except 12 Aug and 16 Sep) until 7 October 2014, 8.30pm to 10.00pm. All are welcome.

6) The Metta Class in Mandarin conducted by Ven. Dhammapala will be on every Friday, 8pm to 10pm.

7) SJBA is hosting a Dhamma Talk in Mandarin by Bro Leong Kok Hing related to Buddhist Stamps, on 21 Sept, 1.30pm to 3.30pm. Bro Leong has previously served as the President and Secretary of YBAM for 16 years. He has held many portfolios in Buddhist societies such as the Chief Editor of Buddhist Digest, the Assistant Secretary of World Fellowship of Buddhist Youth, Fo Guang International Youth Director, Vice Principal of International Buddhist College and etc. At present, he is managing General Affairs of International Buddhist College and Phor Tay Chinese Secondary School in Penang. He was conferred with the Excellent Youth Award and Youth Leader Award from the Ministry of Youth. He has been collecting stamps which has Buddhist themes for 30 years. In the eighties, his stamps have been displayed in some major Buddhist exhibitions in Penang and Kuala Lumpur with “Buddhist Travel”as its theme. He was also invited for his solo in 1990, 1992 in Fo Guang Temple at Singapore and Taiwan.

8) SJBA is sponsoring Ven. Punnavisuddhi to study his Degree & Masters in Pali at a University in Sri Lanka, RM7,000 per year for 5 years for a total of

9) Subang Jaya Buddhist Association is co-organising with the Bodhinyana International Foundation, Australia and the Centre of Mindfulness Limited, Hong Kong, the 1st Buddhist Nuns’ Novitiate Programme in the Theravada Tradition on 7–16 November 2014, under the guidance of Bhikkhuni Hasapanna, Venerable Dhammapala with Ajahn Brahm as the Spiritual Director. This Program will be sponsored by SJBA and the Hong Kong Society of Dhamma Supporters but donations towards the costs of running this Novitiate Programme will be most appreciated. 10) Today’s (24/8/14, Sunday) Dhamma Talk in Mandarin (at 11.30am) is on “Meeting With the Dhamma” by Ven. Dhammapala. Ven. Dhammapala graduated in Pali and Buddhist Studies from the University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka and received his Doctorate from the University of Hong Kong. He has been lecturing in the University of Hong Kong and has presented a number of papers. He is currently the Spritual Director of Buddhistdoor. 11) This morning’s (17/8/14, 10.00am) Dhamma Talk in English is on “Looking Deeper into the Kalama Sutta (Buddhist Charter of Free Inquiry) by Dr. Chan Kah Yein. Sis Kah Yein holds a PhD in Mathematics Education. She is the founder of AnimalCare, a charity which provides neutering and vaccination subsidies for street animals. To date, she has written 8 books for
free distribution. Kah Yein believes in embracing simplicity and traveling light in life.

6) SJBA is hosting a Dhamma Talk in Mandarin by Bro Leong Kok Hing related to Buddhist Stamps, on 21 Sept, 1.30pm to 3.30pm. Bro Leong has previously served as the President and Secretary of YBAM for 16 years. He has held many portfolios in Buddhist societies such as the Chief Editor of Buddhist Digest, the Assistant Secretary of World Fellowship of Buddhist Youth, Fo Guang International Youth Director, Vice Principal of International Buddhist College and etc. At present, he is managing General Affairs of International Buddhist College and Phor Tay Chinese Secondary School in Penang. He was conferred with the Excellent Youth Award and Youth Leader Award from the Ministry of Youth. He has been collecting stamps which has Buddhist themes for 30 years. In the eighties, his stamps have been displayed in some major Buddhist exhibitions in Penang and Kuala Lumpur with “Buddhist Travel”as its theme. He was also invited for his solo in 1990, 1992 in Fo Guang Temple at Singapore and Taiwan.

7) SJBA is sponsoring Ven. Punnavisuddhi to study his Degree & Masters in Pali at a University in Sri Lanka, RM7,000 per year for 5 years for a total of RM35,000. If you wish to partake in this dana to sponsor Ven. Punnavisuddhi in furthering his study, please contact Sis Lily at 03-56348181.

8) Subang Jaya Buddhist Association is co-organising with the Bodhinyana International Foundation, Australia and the Centre of Mindfulness Limited, Hong Kong, the 1st Buddhist Nuns’ Novitiate Programme in the Theravada Tradition on 7–16 November 2014, under the guidance of Bhikkhuni Hasapanna, Venerable Dhammapala with Ajahn Brahm as the Spiritual Director. This Program will be sponsored by SJBA and the Hong Kong Society of Dhamma Supporters but donations towards the costs of running this Novitiate Programme will be most appreciated. 10) This morning’s (17/8/14, 10.00am) Dhamma Talk in English will be given by Sayadaw U Rewata. Sayadaw U Rewata. Sayadaw U Rewata was born in 1955 in Thonse, Myanmar. He graduated in 1980 with Bachelor of Science at the Rangoon University. He was ordained in 1983. He followed Pariyatti and Patipatti under the guidance of Most Venerable Chanmyay Sayadaw U Janaka Bhivamsa. He has travelled widely to many countries like Japan, USA, Canada, India, etc for missionary work, teaching Metta Bhavana, Vipassana Bhavana, Suttanta Recitations, etc. He served as the Abbot in Hmawbi, Yangon in 2004 to 2006, and also has been the Abbot of the Satipatthana Vipassana Association, Springfield, USA. Sayadaw U Rewata is currently in Subang Jaya Buddhist Association to support its Dhamma missionary work
