National Prayer for MH 370

A National Prayer Service by the Sangha of the 3 major traditions will be held this Sunday as follows:

Date: 6 April 2014, Sunday

Time: 10.00am – 12.00pm

Venue: Dewan San Choon, Wisma MCA, Jalan Ampang

The objective of the Prayer Service is to pray and show our concern, care and loving-kindness for the passengers and crew of MH370 and their families and relatives, as well as to help the nation in this difficult time.

The participating organisations are Malaysian Buddhist Association, Young Buddhist Association of Malaysia, Fo Guang Shan, Persatuan Penganut Agama Buddha Fo Guang Malaysia, Buddhist Maha Vihara, Buddhist Missionary Society Malaysia, Theravada Buddhist Council of Malaysia, Vajrayana Buddist Council of Malaysia, Kencara and others

1) The Traditional Chinese Medicine Service in SJBA will be off 2 Saturdays, 9th February and 16th February 2013 and will resume on 23rd February. It is another community service for our members and devotees with SJBA arranging with 2 experienced Chinese Physicians qualified in Traditional Chinese Medicine Treatment to give treatment to those with certain sicknesses and bodily ache/pain, every Saturday, 9am to 12pm, at SJBA.

2) Our Sunday Dhamma School children, Youth Section and Teen Quest members will be making house calls to bring auspicious New Year greetings and songs, Buddhist hymns and good wishes to the hosts and family. Those who wish to invite them to your homes on 24th February 2013, may book through Sis. Lily at Tel. 03-56348181.

3) SJBA will be organizing the Introduction to Buddhism course from 1 March to 19 April 2013. The course will run for 8 consecutive Fridays from 8.30pm to 10.00pm and will be conducted by Uncle Vijaya, Bro Charlie Chia and Dr Chan Kah Yein. All are welcome. No pre-registration is required. Please contact Sis Lily at 03-56348181 for further details.

2) This morning, Sayadaw U Rewata will lead us in chanting and meditation. Sayadaw U Rewata was born in 1955 in Thonse, Myanmar. He graduated in 1980 with Bachelor of Science at the Rangoon University. He was ordained in 1983. He followed Pariyatti and Patipatti under the guidance of Most Venerable Chanmyay Sayadaw U Janaka Bhivamsa. He has travelled widely to many countries like Japan, USA, Canada, India, etc for missionary work, teaching Metta Bhavana, Vipassana Bhavana, Suttanta Recitations, etc. He served as the Abbot in Hmawbi, Yangon in 2004 to 2006, and also has been the Abbot of the Satipatthana Vipassana Association, Springfield, USA. Sayadaw U Rewata is currently in Subang Jaya Buddhist Association to support its Dhamma missionary work.

2) This morning’s Dhamma Talk is on “FROM PERCEPTION TO STRESS” which is on the Buddha’s Teaching on the Process of Perception (“pañca-khandha”, the 5-aggregates) arise and dissolve, leading to emotional reaction and craving (“tanhā”) that give rise to stress and suffering (“dukkha”), and how we can reduce the harmful effects of stress. The Speaker, Bro. Billy Tan is a Professional Trainer and Business Development Consultant who has trained countless corporate executives and business professionals in more than 20 countries over the past three decades. Bro. Billy is a Certified Master Practitioner of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), as well as being certified by the International Association of Counselors and Therapists, USA, in Clinical Hypnotherapy.
In recent years Bro. Billy has conducted several professional training programs for resident and visiting Monks at the Buddhist Maha Vihara, Brickfields, in the areas of Emotional Intelligence, Communication, Professional Presentation, Public Relations, Community Services, Leadership, and Management. In sharing the Dhamma, Bro. Billy researches discoveries from the fields of Neuroscience and Psychology to present teachings of the Buddha from a scientific perspective.
Currently, Bro. Billy offers talks, seminars, workshops and professional training programs to Buddhist community centers and charity organizations.

3) This morning’s (13th January) Dhamma Talk is on “Service to Others” by Bro Tan Siang Chye. Bro. Siang Chye graduated from Kent Institute, UK and with a Master degree from Massey University, New Zealand. He was a former Chairman of the Buddhist Missionary Youth Section and also the parent body, BMSM for one session. He is a striving meditator and has practised under several prominent meditation teachers locally and in New Zealand. Bro. Siang Chye is currently the Chairman of the Dhamma Committee of SJBA.

1) SJBA is organizing a New Year Eve Blessing Night cum Charity Countdown (in assistance of the Persatuan Kebajikan Kanak-kanak Kurang Upaya) on December 31, 2012 (Monday) to usher in 2013. It is a good time for all of us to get together to reinforce our fellowship, show our care for the less fortunate, and at the same time to reflect on our deeds, and make aspirations to continue to improve ourselves in the upcoming year. The program shall begin at 8.30pm with Buddha Puja, Chanting & Blessings by the Sangha, sing-a-long Buddhist Hymns, Reflection on 2012 and making Aspirations for 2013, followed by refreshment (satay, mee siam, bubur cha cha, etc), karaoke fund-raising and countdown, accompanied by some fireworks, to usher in the New Year. (Lighting of Blessing Oil Lamp will commence at 9.00am at the Vihara).

Please bring your family and friends to join us to usher in a better year. Karaoke enthusiasts are requested to bring their favorite discs.

2) This morning’s (30th Dec) Dhamma Talk is on “Being Wealthy and Well” by Sis Tan Yee Yong. Sis Yee Yong has been very active in the Buddhist Youth activities since the 80s. She was a former Chairperson of SJBA Youth Section and has served in SJBA Dhamma Committee since the 90s. She is also a hospice volunteer. She graduated with BSc and MBA, and also has a Diploma (BAPU) and MA in Buddhist Studies (IBC).
