Day Retreat

Announcements (Wednesday, 3 October 2018)

1) SJBA is organizing a 3-day Vipassana Meditation Retreat from 6 to 8 November 2018 (check-in on 5 November, 6pm-8pm), to be conducted by SJBA’s Abbot, Venerable Nyanaramsi Maha Thera. RM45 will be charged for breakfast, lunch and refreshment during the Retreat.

If you wish to join in the retreat as yogi or wish to sponsor food for the monks and yogis, and other expenses during the Retreat, please contact our Office Administrator for more information. Closing date for registration: 31 October, 2018 or upon reaching the optimum number of yogis registering.

2) This year’s Kathina Ceremony in SJBA will be held on Sunday, 11 November 2018. Kathina is a traditional Buddhist Ceremony started by the Buddha Himself for lay devotees to offer robes and other requisites to the Sangha at the end of Vassa (rainy season).
The Ceremony will begin at 7.15am, 11 November 2018, with the Taking of the Three Refuges and Observance of the Five Precepts administered by the Sangha, Procesion round the Vihara, Offering of Robes and other Requisites, Sharing of Merits and Lunch Dana. A blood donation campaign will also be held on this auspicious day. Please come and join us to perform these meritorious deeds together.

3) SJBA will be organizing a 10-day Vipassana Meditation Retreat from 2 to 12 January 2019. The Retreat will be conducted by Sayadaw U Sobhita. Sayadaw U Sobhita is a highly respected meditation teacher at the renowned Chanmyay Meditation Centre, Yangon, Myanmar. He was born in 1951 and was fully ordained as a Bhikkhu by the Most Venerable Sayadawgyi U Janakabhivamsa in 1970. He studied the Dhamma under Sayadaw U Tejavanta, Sayadawgyi U Janakabhivamsa and other famous Sayadaws in Myanmar. In 1983, he practised Vipassana Meditation under the guidance of the late Mahasi Sayadaw. Since then, he has been teaching the Dhamma, especially meditation, to devotees in Myanmar and abroad.

2) There will be a special Dhamma Talk by Luang Pu Boonsong Thittasara in SJBA Shrine Hall on 30 September 2018 (Sunday), 8.30pm, followed by Breakfast Dana on 1 October and 2 October, 6.30am in SJBA. Luang Pu Boonsong Thittasara, 81 years old with 51 vassa, is the Abbot of Wat Santivanaram. He was once under the tutelage of Luang Pu Whaen (disciple of of Luang Pu Mun) and other famous meditation teachers. Luang Pu Boonsong Thittasara now teaches monks and lay devotees in the forest tradition.

2) SJBA is organising a potluck dinner for Mooncake Family Night on this Saturday, 22/9/2018, at 7.00pm. All are welcome. Please bring along your specialty dish. In line with SJBA’s efforts in promoting a caring and sharing community, we are inviting underprivileged children to join us in our celebration. We aim to fulfil the simple wishes of these children through our Children’s Wish Fulfillment program. If you wish to sponsor the items of these children wishes, please contact Sis. We encourage you to bring your family and friends (and lanterns too) to the Temple on this Mooncake Family Night.

1) In conjunction with the 7th Lunar Month, SJBA is organising a Pattidana (Dedication of Merits) Ceremony on 26 August 2018 for the departed ones. When those departed relatives and friends, who may been reborn in certain unfortunate state of existence, become aware that their departed relatives performing meritorious deeds dedicated to them, they can feel relief. If they rejoice repeatedly, their unhappy birth can be transformed into a happy one. It is the duty of relatives to perform acts of merits for the departed ones. The program will start at 8.00am with the offering of flowers, candles and pure water, followed by Pindacara, chanting, Dhamma Talk, offering of requisites, dedication of merits to the departed ones and followed by Blessings by the Sangha and lunch dana.

2) SJBA is celebrating our country’s 61th Merdeka Day on 31st August 2018 (Friday). The Celebration will start with a Merdeka Breakfast at 7.45am, followed by Flag Raising Ceremony, Blessings by the Venerable Monks, cutting of Merdeka cake and fellowship. Members and devotees are invited to join us for the Celebration. To encourage our members’ children to strive for excellence in their academic performance, SJBA will present Academic Excellence Awards to students who excelled in their examinations in 2016. The Awards will be given out on Merdeka Day, 31st August 2018.

On the same day, SJBA is also organizing a Blessings Service for students sitting for UPSR, PT3, SPM, STPM, etc. examinations this year, conducted by the Members of the Sangha. .

Our Wesak Celebration will start on Wesak Eve, 28 May 2018, Monday, with lighting of Blessings Oil Lamps at 7.30pm followed by Wesak Eve Buddha Puja, Dhamma Talk by Ven. Nyanaramsi, Procession Round the Vihara and Bodhi Tree, Chanting and Meditation. On Wesak Day, Puja Service will commence at 8.00am followed by the official launching of the Wesak Day Celebration at 9.45am. Blessings Service will be carried by the Maha Sangha until 4pm.

From 11.00am to 2.30pm, vegetarian food will be provided. There will be a Blood Donation & Organ Pledge Campaign, Traditional Chinese Medicine diagnosis and treatment for devotees needing such services.

We need around 100 volunteer helpers to help organize all these activities. Please register yourselves by writing your name at our Notice Board or call Sis. Lily at Tel. 03-56315299.
