1) The “What Buddhists Believe” 9-Friday course, 8.30pm to 10.00pm at SJBA Shrine Hall is still in progress. The course is based on the book “What Buddhist Believe” by the late Chief Reverend Dr. K Sri Dhammananda.

The topic this Friday, 28 June  is  “Nature of the World” by Uncle Vijaya.

The topic next Friday, 5 July is “The Re-Discovered Path” by Bro. Tan Siang Chye.

2) In conjunction with the country’s 62nd Merdeka Day on 31st August 2019 (Saturday), SJBA will present Academic Excellence Awards to students who have excelled in their examinations in 2018.  Application is now open to students who have excelled in the following examinations: 

       

            (a) (i)  UPSR                              – SK  :  5 As

                                                                SJK :  6 As & above

                 (ii)  PT3                                 – 7 As & above (excluding lisan & oral)

                 (iii) SPM                                –  8 As & above

                 (iv)  STPM (or equivalent)   –  3 As & above

3) SJBA invite you and family and friends to a spiritual and mentally enriching morning at this Sunday’s Buddha Puja commencing at 9.15am with offering of lights, flowers and incense to the Buddha, chanting, Dhamma Talk by Venerable Dr. Dhammapala and Sharing of Merits. 

Venerable Dr. Dhammapala graduated in Pali and Buddhist Studies from the University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka and received his Doctorate from the University of Hong Kong. He has been lecturing in the University of Hong Kong and presented a number of papers. He is the Spiritual Director of Buddhistdoor and Vice Chairman of the Hong Kong University of Buddhist Studies Alumini Association. He is now the Abbot of Brahmavihara Monastery & Retreat Centre, Melaka.

1) There will  be a Dhamma Talk titled “The Path an Attainment of Ariya-hood on 6 April, Saturday, 8pm to 10pm, by Ven. Dr. Dhammapala. The Talk will highlight the ‘gradual process of the different stages of spiritual path and their abandonment of categories of defilements, and finally attainment of arahathood. Ven. Dr. Dhammapala has a PhD in Buddhist Study under the supervision of Ven. Dhammajoti n the University Hong Kong. He traveled frequently to conduct meditation retreats, Dhamma talks in Malaysia, Hong Kong, Taiwan and China. Currently, he is the Abbot of the Brahmavihara Monastery & Retreat Centre, Melaka, the Bodhvana Monastery in Sg. Pelek and the Centre of Mindfulness, Hong Kong.
2) In conjunction with Qing Ming, SJBA is organising a Pattidana on 14 April, 8am to 11am in SJBA Shrine Hall to dedicate merits to the departed ones. Pattidana is for the benefit of those departed relatives and friends who may have been reborn in certain unfortunate state of existence. When they are aware that their relatives or friends have performed some meritorious deeds dedicated to them, they can be relieved of their suffering. When they rejoice repeatedly, their unhappy birth will be transformed to a happy one.

1) SJBA cordially invite you and family and friends to join us at our “Gong Xi, Gong Xi” Dinner on 16 February, Saturday, 7pm to celebrate the Chinese New Year together and promote fellowship as we enjoy the various program planned for the night together with our special guests from the Old Folks Homes. You many bring along some food to share with others and angpows for the old folks too (about 45 pax). 

2) SJBA Youth Section will be making house calls to bring New Year greetings and songs, Buddhist hymns and good wishes to the hosts and family on 17 February, Sunday. 3) SJBA invite you and family and friends to a spiritual and mentally enriching morning at this Sunday’s Buddha Puja commencing at 9.15am with offering of lights, flowers and incense to the Buddha, chanting and Blessings by the Sangha.  
4) In conjunction with the Chinese New Year, Venerable Members of the Sangha will conduct a Welcoming the Chinese New Year Eve Blessings for devotees on 4 February 2019 (Monday) at 10.30pm; and Chinese New Year Blessing Service on 5 February 2019 (Tuesday) at 9.30am, 1pm and 8.30pm

Announcements (Thursday, 29 November 2018)

1) SJBA is organising the 12th Annual Educare Program in SJBA in aid of needy students, providing them with school items to start the new school term. It is expected that about 500 needy students will receive the school items on 9 December 2018 (9am). Each student will receive a full set of school items which consists of school bags, shoes, books, stationary, etc. which costs about RM108.00. The amount may not be a lot but it is a simple yet significant gesture of ours to show our care and concern to poor students. We hope that through this simple but sincere gesture, the students are motivated to study better and achieve academic success and eventually success in life.

2) SJBA is organising the auspicious 28 Buddhas Puja beginning with an Inauguration Puja on 15 December 2018, 8.00pm to 10.00pm at SJBA Shrine Hall and the Grand 28 Buddhas Puja Ceremony on 1 January 2019, 6.15pm to 10.00pm.

From 16 December to 31 December 2018, there will be daily chanting during the weekdays’ morning from 8.00am to 11.00am and in the evening from 7.30pm to 10.00pm.

On Saturdays and Sundays, morning chanting will be from 8.00am to 9.30am and evening chanting from 7.30pm to 10.00pm.

Sayadaw U Sobhita is a highly respected meditation teacher at the renowned Chanmyay Meditation Centre, Yangon, Myanmar. He was born in 1951 and was fully ordained as a Bhikkhu by the Most Venerable Sayadawgyi U Janakabhivamsa in 1970. He studied the Dhamma under Sayadaw U Tejavanta, Sayadawgyi U Janakabhivamsa and other famous Sayadaws in Myanmar. In 1983, he practised Vipassana Meditation under the guidance of the late Mahasi Sayadaw. Since then, he has been teaching the Dhamma, especially meditation, to devotees in Myanmar and abroad.
Sayadaw U Sobhita will be assisted by Sayadaw U Pinnyarnanda, the Abbot of Chanmyay Yeiktha Meditation Centre, Pyin Oo Lwin branch, Myanmar.

1) SJBA is organizing a 3-day Vipassana Meditation Retreat from 6 to 8 November 2018 in SJBA Vihara, to be conducted by Ven. Nyanaramsi Maha Thera, the Abbot of SJBA. If you wish to join in the retreat as yogi or wish to sponsor food for the monks and yogis, and other expenses during the Retreat, please contact our Office Administrator for more information.

2) This year’s Kathina Ceremony in SJBA will be held on Sunday, 11 November 2018. Kathina is a traditional Buddhist Ceremony started by the Buddha Himself for lay devotees to offer robes and other requisites to the Sangha at the end of Vassa (rainy season).

The Ceremony will begin on the Eve, 10 November 2018 at 8pm with Taking the Three Refuges, Dhamma Talk, Procession around the Vihara, Sharing of Merits and a light refreshment.

On Kathina Day, 11 November 2018, the Ceremony will start at 8.30am with with the Taking of the Three Refuges, Offering of Robes and other Requisites, Sharing of Merits and Lunch Dana. A blood donation campaign will also be held on this auspicious day. Please come and join us to perform these meritorious deeds together.

1) There will be a special interest Talk on “Should A Person With Mental Illness Meditate” by Dr. Phang Cheng Kar (M.D.) this Sunday, 21 October, 2pm to 4pm at SJBA’s Multi-Purpose Hall (Basement). Dr. Phang is a consultant psychiatrist and mindfulness-based therapist at Sunway Medical Center. He developed the MINDFULGym which is a mindfulness-based stress reduction and wellness program. He is the President of the Malaysia Association for Mindfulness Practice & Research (MMPR) and KL Buddhist Mental Health Association.

2) There will be a special Dhamma Talk by Luang Pu Boonsong Thittasara in SJBA Shrine Hall on 30 September 2018 (Sunday), 8.30pm, followed by Breakfast Dana on 1 October and 2 October, 6.30am in SJBA. Luang Pu Boonsong Thittasara, 81 years old with 51 vassa, is the Abbot of Wat Santivanaram. He was once under the tutelage of Luang Pu Whaen (disciple of of Luang Pu Mun) and other famous meditation teachers. Luang Pu Boonsong Thittasara now teaches monks and lay devotees in the forest tradition.

2) SJBA is organising a potluck dinner for Mooncake Family Night on this Saturday, 22/9/2018, at 7.00pm. All are welcome. Please bring along your specialty dish. In line with SJBA’s efforts in promoting a caring and sharing community, we are inviting underprivileged children to join us in our celebration. We aim to fulfil the simple wishes of these children through our Children’s Wish Fulfillment program. If you wish to sponsor the items of these children wishes, please contact Sis. We encourage you to bring your family and friends (and lanterns too) to the Temple on this Mooncake Family Night.
