Announcements (Thursday, 27 April 2017)

1) The construction, renovation and upgrading works of SJBA Vihara is almost complete except for the sewage treatment plant. The ground floor toilets will also be refurbished soon. Final touch-up, rectification and clearing works are still in progress. Devotees are reminded to be mindful of own safety when inside the Vihara’s compound.
2) This year’s Wesak day falls on 10 May 2017. Our Wesak Celebration will start on Wesak Eve, 9 May with lighting of Blessings Oil Lamps at 7.30pm followed by Wesak Eve Buddha Puja, Dhamma Talk by Ven. Nyanaramsi, Procession Round the Vihara and Bodhi Tree, Chanting and Meditation. On Wesak Day, Puja Service will commence at 8.00am followed by the official launching of the Wesak Day Celebration at 9.45am. Blessings Service will be carried by the Maha Sangha.
From 11.00am to 2.30pm, vegetarian food will be provided. From 9am to 3pm, there will be a Blood Donation & Organ Pledge Campaign, Traditional Chinese Medicine diagnosis and treatment and also Qi Tuina treatment for devotees needing such services.
We need around 200 volunteer helpers to help organize all these activities. Please register yourselves by writing your name at our Notice Board or call Sis. Lily at Tel. 03-56315299.
3) This Sunday’s Buddha Puja will be led by Venerable Indarathana at 9.30am followed by chanting, meditation, Dhamma Talk, blessings and sharing of merits.

2) SJBA will be organising a Meditation Retreat, conducted by SJBA Abbot, Venerable Nyanaramsi Mahathera, as follows:

Date : 15 to 19 April 2017 (Saturday to Wednesday)

Venue : Chin Swee Caves Temple (Genting)

Meals : Vegetarian

Lodging : Twin sharing Room RM400, Single Room RM456 (subject to availability, all comes with attached bathroom and water heater)

Transportation : Bus (to and fro)

Yogis are required to take 9 precepts during the retreat and adhere to the rules and regulations of the retreat

Registration is open now, on first come first serve basis. Confirmation of place is upon submission of Registration Form with Payment to Sis. Lily (Tel.: 03-56315299, 016-3379086).

3) In conjunction with Qing Ming, SJBA is organising a Pattidana on 9 April 2017, 8am to 11am, to dedicate merits to the departed ones. Pattidana is for the benefit of those departed relatives and friends who may have been reborn in certain unfortunate state of existence. When they are aware that their relatives or friends have performed some meritorious deeds dedicated to them, they can be relieved of their suffering. When they rejoice repeatedly, their unhappy birth will be transformed to a happy one.

It is the duty of relatives to perform these acts of merits for the departed ones. The Pattidana will start with the offering of flowers and lights at 8am, Metta Recitation, Buddha Puja, Dhamma Talk by Bhante Nyanaramsi, Dedication of Merits to Departed Ones.

4) This Sunday Dhamma Talk (26/3/17, 10.00am) on “Realities of Stress” will be given by Bro Billy Tan. Bro. Billy Tan is a Professional Trainer and Business Development Consultant who has trained countless corporate executives and business professionals in more than 20 countries over the past three decades. Bro. Billy is a Certified Master Practitioner of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), as well as being certified by the International Association of Counselors and Therapists, USA, in Clinical Hypnotherapy. In recent years Bro. Billy has conducted several professional training programs for resident and visiting Monks at the Buddhist Maha Vihara, Brickfields, in the areas of Emotional Intelligence, Communication, Professional Presentation, Public Relations, Community Services, Leadership, and Management. In sharing the Dhamma, Bro. Billy researches discoveries from the fields of Neuroscience and Psychology to present teachings of the Buddha from a scientific perspective.

1) As part of our effort to upgrade the facilities of SJBA Vihara to provide better environment and support services for our members and devotees, in addition to building the new block, the following places will be renovated on the dates as follows:
Kitchen: 15/12/16 to 10/3/17
Office, Library, Airwell area: 10/1/17 to 10/3/17
Please note that TCM, Metta and Vipassana Meditation, Yoga, Longevitology sessions in the respective Hall or rooms or Airwell Area will need to be temporarily closed during the above periods.
Other activities will go on as usual, eg. our regular Sunday Puja Service (English), New & Full Moon Chanting & Vegetarian Lunch, Breakfast & Lunch Dana for Monks and other activities using the Shrine Hall (no renovation in Shrine Hall except some cabling works, video system upgrade and relocating the sound system to the left).
Our Sunday Dhamma School will reopen on 9th April 2017 for existing and new Students.

Siang Chye graduated from Kent Institute, UK and with a Master degree from Massey University, New Zealand. He was a former Chairman of SJBA Dhamma Committee. He is a striving meditator and has practised under several prominent meditation teachers locally and in New Zealand.

2) On this Chinese New Year Eve (27 January 2017) , SJBA’s Resident Monk, Venerable Indarathana will conduct a New Year Blessings for devotees at our Shrine Hall at 11pm. On the first day of Chinese New Year (28 January 2017) Ven. Indarathana will conduct New Year Blessings at 10am followed by lunch dana at 11am, and then another New Year Blessings Session at 12.30pm. If you wish to partake in this auspicious blessing service for a better year ahead, abundantly blessed, do come and join us.
In view of the ongoing construction and renovation works going on in SJBA Vihara, we have decided not to organise our annual Gong Xi Gong Xi Dinner in SJBA this year (earlier scheduled on 11 February 2017).
SJBA Youth Section members together with some Dhamma School children will be making house calls on 12 February 2017 to bring Chinese New Year greetings and songs, Buddhist hymns and good wishes to the hosts and family. 3) This Sunday Dhamma Talk (22/1/17, after Buddha Puja at 9.30am) is on “The Seven Types of Obsessions” by Venerable Dedunupitiye Upananda. Venerable Upananda has been a Buddhist monk for 35 years. He holds a Bachelor’s Honours degree in Pali from the University of Kelaniya in Sri Lanka, a Master of Arts in comparative religion from Florida International University at Miami, a Master of Philosophy in comparative religion from the University of Cambridge in England, Certification in Addiction Studies from Mount Royal University in Canada, and a Graduate Diploma in English Language teaching from London Teacher Training College. He has taught meditation at the US Department of Justice and different police departments in the United States. He has taught religion at Florida International University and the University of Kelaniya. He is Chief Sanghanayake of North America, the Head of Ehipassiko Buddhist Centre in Canada, a meditation instructor, and a child, family and juvenile guidance counsellor.

image00141) Due to the building extension and renovation works in SJBA Vihara, this year’s Annual Vipassana Meditation Retreat will be held at Sri Lanka Buddhist Temple, Sentul from 29 December 2016 to 7 January 2017. The Retreat will be conducted by Sayadaw U Pyinnyarnanda from Chanmyay Yeiktha Meditation Centre, assisted by our Abbot, Ven. Nyanaramsi. If you wish to join in the Retreat as yogi or wish to be a helper or sponsor food for the monks and yogis and other expenses during the Retreat, please contact Sis Lily at 03-56348181.
2) SJBA is organising a 28 Buddhas Puja Ceremony on 7 January 2017, 7pm to 10pm, which will give everyone the opportunity to make individual offerings to all 28 past Buddha who appeared before (and include) the present Buddha, Gautama Buddha. This great ceremony invokes one’s affinity with the infinite virtues of Buddha’s by reciting and recollecting the 28 Buddha’s names and virtues. This brings great blessings for the people who partake in the Ceremony. Recollection of the Buddha’s virtues help purify one’s mind and may even lead one to the attainment of enlightenment.
Traditionally this 28 Buddha’s Puja is performed to bring longevity, beauty, good health, happiness, prosperity, unity and harmony of family as well as success in one’s career or business and excellence in children’s education. image00141) This year is the 11th anniversary of the Educare Program in SJBA. For the last 10 years, we have been providing needy students with school items to start the new school term. It is expected that about 500 needy students will receive the school items on 4 December 2016. Each student will receive a full set of school items which consist of school bags, shoes, books, stationary, etc costing about RM108. The amount may not be a lot but it is a simple yet significant gesture to show our care and concern to the poor students. We hope that through this simple by sincere gesture, the students are motivated to study better and achieve academic success and eventually success in life. image0014(1) In conjunction with the Mid-Autumn Festival, SJBA is organizing a Mooncake Family Night this Saturday, 10 September 2016. It will be a fun-filled night to celebrate with family. In line with SJBA’s effort in promoting a caring and compassionate community, we have invited children from Persatuan Kebajikan Kanak-kanak Kurang Upaya (P3KU) to join us in our celebration.

Please remember to bring your lantern along for the traditional lantern procession round the temple to end the night. DINNER WILL BE SERVED, however we encourage you to bring some desserts to share with everyone. Please bring your family and friends to SJBA on Saturday, 10 September 2016, 7.00pm to join us in our fun-filled celebration.
(2) SJBA will be organising an Intermediate Course on Buddhism from 23 September to 28 October 2016. The course will run for 6 consecutive Fridays from 8.30pm to 10.00pm and will be conducted by Uncle Vijaya, Bro Charlie Chia and Dr Chan Kah Yein. The course will cover Buddhist views on contemporary issues and Buddhist living. All are welcome. Please contact Sis Cindy at 03-56348181 for further details.
(3) Venerable Sujatha will be coming back to lead in a Night of Spiritual Cultivation in SJBA on 21 September, 8.30pm. Venerable Sujatha entered the monastery at the age of 11 and graduated from the Subodharama International Monk Training Center. In 1993, he left Sri Lanka for Australia, where he taught meditation and Buddhism at the Sri Lankarama Buddhist Monastery in Brisbane. In 1997, he helped establish the Great Lakes Buddhist Vihara in Southfield, Michigan.
In 2002, Venerable Sujatha was invited to start meditation classes at both Congregational Unitarian Church in Woodstock, Illinois and McHenry County College. Soon after, Venerable Sujatha founded the Blue Lotus Buddhist Temple in Woodstock, Illinois, at the premises where the Congregational Unitarian Church once stood. As the Abbot of Blue Lotus Buddhist Temple, Venerable Sujatha travels around USA and abroad to teach the Buddha Dhamma and Meditation, and regularly devotes his time in Sri Lanka in aid of several missionary and charity projects.
Venerable Sujatha has been a Buddhist Monk for over 30 years, and is singularly focused on adding more love and bringing happiness in the world. He teaches loving-kindness meditation to people around the globe for all those seeking the art of happiness and contentment. His approach to meditation is deep and profound, yet simple and practical, bringing core Buddhist teachings to everyone in a way that is practical and easy to understand. A joyful, radiant, funny and wildly energetic monk, Venerable Sujatha will help anyone obtain peace and tranquility that can only be found in deep silence.
(4) This Sunday Dhamma Talk (11/9/16, 10am) will be given by U Pannasara who is staying in SJBA Vihara for the Vassa. Sayadaw U Pannasara was in Myanmar in 1972. He was ordained at the age of 20 in Khun Taung Gyi. After passing his Buddhist Scriptures and Buddhist Scripture education (Dhammacariya) in 2003, he practised Vipassana Meditation at the Mahasi Meditation Centre under the guidance of Ven. Nayaka Sayadaw Jatila. He graduated from the Mahasi Training School for foreign Buddhist Mission.

Sayadaw U Pannasara has been teaching the Dhamma and Vipassana Meditation in Thailand and at the Lunas Hermitage, Kedah.

(5) The Sunday Dhamma Talk in Mandarin will be off for two Sundays and will resume on 25 September 2016

(6) This Sunday (4th Sept 2016, 10am – 11am at Sima Hall) Dhamma Talk is on “Meeting With the Dhamma” by Ven. Dhammapala. Ven. Dhammapala graduated in Pali and Buddhist Studies from the University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka and received his Doctorate from the University of Hong Kong. He has been lecturing in the University of Hong Kong and has presented a number of papers. He is currently the Director of Centre of Mindfullness, Hong Kong, Spiritual Director of Buddhistdoor. Vice Chairman of the Hong Kong University Centre of Buddhist Studies Alumini Association and Director of a few Buddhist-based organisations.

这个星期日的讲题是与佛法相会, 讲师是法护法师. 法师毕业于斯里兰卡的Kelaniya大学,专注于巴利文和佛教研究。法师也在香港大学获得了博士学位,也在香港大学当过讲师,并呈列了一些论文。他目前是 “Buddhistdoor” 佛门的精神理事。是香港大学, 佛学校友会中心的副主席。也是其他以佛教为基础的组织的理事主任
