Announcements (Thursday, 28 September 2017)

1) SJBA invites you to celebrate mid-autumn this Saturday, 30 September 2017, 7pm to 10pm. Dinner will be served at 7pm followed by Youth Section Performance (Drama and singing on the origin of Mooncake Festival),Riddles solving, lucky draws, mid-light tour, etc. etc.

2) During the Vassa Period, Ven. Indarathana will lead in chanting the Dhammacakkappavattana every day, 7.30pm to 8.15pm. On Tuesdays, the chanting will followed by Pali Chanting & Sutta Study.

3) All devotees are welcome to our Monday Metta Meditation session at SJBA Meditation Hall from 8.30pm to 9.45pm. This cultivation of metta focus on loving kindness to oneself, loved ones and all other beings. On every 1st Monday, our Resident Monk will be guiding the meditators especially the newcomers.

4) There will be Day Retreat in SJBA during New Moon and Full Moon Days from 9am to 5pm. The Retreat is free and easy and participants can feel free to join in or leave any time. Vegetarian lunch will be provided.

5) This year’s Kathina Ceremony will be held on Sunday, 15th October 2017. Kathina is a traditional Buddhist Ceremony started by the Buddha Himself for lay devotees to offer robes and other requisites to the Sangha at the end of Vassa (rainy season). The Ceremony will commence at 7.00am with the Taking of the Three Refuges and Observance of the Five Precepts administered by the Sangha, Procession, Offering of Robes and other Requisites, Sharing of Merits and Lunch Dana. A blood donation campaign will also be held on this auspicious day. Please come and join us to perform these meritorious deeds together. In view of some unforeseen circumstances, there will be no Kathina Eve program this year.

5) In conjunction with the 7th Lunar Month, SJBA is organising a Pattidana (Dedication of Merits) Ceremony for the departed ones. When those departed relatives and friends, who may been reborn in certain unfortunate state of existence, become aware that their departed relatives performing meritorious deeds dedicated to them, they can feel relief. If they rejoice repeatedly, their unhappy birth can be transformed into a happy one. It is the duty of relatives to perform acts of merits for the departed ones. The program will start at 8.00am with the offering of flowers, candles and pure water, followed by Pindacara, chanting, Dhamma Talk, offering of requisites, dedication of merits to the departed ones and followed by Blessings by the Sangha and lunch dana. All are welcome.

1) SJBA will be hosting An Evening of Q & A with Ven. Dhammavuddho Maha Thera this Saturday, 30 June 2017, Friday, 8.30pm to 10.00pm at SJBA Shrine Hall. Ven. Dhammavuddho Maha Thera graduated from the University Malaya in 1971 and worked as an Electrical Engineer with the Public Works Department for 12 years before renouncing the home life. He was the Founder of the Vihara Buddha Gotama and is a Monastic Advisor of the Theravada Buddhist Council of Malaysia. He has written numerous books on Buddhism, eg. Return to the original Buddha’s Teachings, Message of the Buddha, Buddhist Monks’ Precepts, Liberation: Relevance of Sutta Vinaya, Only We Can Help Ourselves, etc.
2) On 8 July 2017, Saturday, 8.30pm to 10.00pm, SJBA will be making the invitation to Venerable Indarathana to enter Vassa (Rains Retreat) in SJBA. The program will include taking the 3 Refuges and observe the 5 Precepts, formal invitation to Venerable Indarathana to stay in SJBA for the 3-month Vassa, determination by the Venerable, offering of robes and requisites to the Sangha followed by chanting and sharing of merits. Members and devotees are invited to witness this Vassa Entry Ceremony.

image00141) In conjunction with the 3-month Rains Retreat (Vassa), the Sunday Dhamma Talks in SJBA will be delivered by either Venerable Indarathana (1st and 3rd Sundays) or Sayadaw U Pannasara (2nd and 4th Sundays). Sayadaw U Pannasara will also lead Mondays’ Metta Meditation and Thursdays’ Vipassana Meditation.

Starting from 6 August 2016, SJBA’s Bhojjanga Chanting Session has been rescheduled to the 1st Saturday of the month, from 8.30pm to 10pm. Venerable Indarathana will lead in the recitation of the Parittas for protection from various forms of misfortunes, sicknesses, evil spirits, influence of planetary system as well as instilling confidence in the mind. Members and devotees are invited to come with relatives and friends to heal oneself and others.

Starting from 10 Aug 2016, from 8.30pm to 9.30pm, Venerable Indarathana will start a new Wednesday Spiritual Group Cultivation with the objective to learn and practice the Dhamma. The session will include puja, chanting, short guided meditation and Dhamma discussion. All are welcome to join in this spiritual cultivation to cultivate the mind and develop compassion and wisdom.

To encourage our members’ children to strive for excellence in their academic performance, SJBA will present Academic Excellence Awards to students who excelled in their examinations in 2015. The Awards will be given out on Merdeka Day, 31st August 2016. The closing date for application for the Award is 31 July 2016.
On the same day, SJBA is also organizing a Blessings Service for students sitting for UPSR, PT3, SPM, STPM, etc. examinations this year, conducted by the Members of the Sangha.

(4) SJBA’s “Buy a Brick” Campaign will stop on 31 August 2016. The Campaign has been very successful to raise funds for the construction of our extension block. Each brick is RM100 and donors can write their names on the bricks or sign on the bricks which will then be used for the construction of the new block. It is estimated the brick-works of our new block will be completed by mid September. All bricks sponsored from now to 31 August 2016 will be used to construct 3 new Monk Rooms at the Roof Top.

(5) This Sunday Dhamma Talk (31/7/16, 10am) will be given by U Pannasara who is staying in SJBA Vihara for the Vassa. Sayadaw U Pannasara was in Myanmar in 1972. He was ordained at the age of 20 in Khun Taung Gyi. After passing his Buddhist Scriptures and Buddhist Scripture education (Dhammacariya) in 2003, he practised Vipassana Meditation at the Mahasi Meditation Centre under the guidance of Ven. Nayaka Sayadaw Jatila. He graduated from the Mahasi Training School for foreign Buddhist Mission.

Sayadaw U Pannasara has been teaching the Dhamma and Vipassana Meditation in Thailand and at the Lunas Hermitage, Kedah.

(6) This Sunday’s Dhamma Talk in Mandarin (31/7/16, 11.30 am at Sima Hall) is on “Practical Application of Dhamma” by by Sis Tan Yee Yong. Sis Tan Yee Yong graduated with Bachelor of Science in Computer Sience and MBA. She obtained MA in Buddhist Studies from IBC, Thailand. She is now a Dhamma committee member of SJBA.

The Celebration will start with a Merdeka Breakfast at 7.45am, followed by Flag Raising Ceremony, Blessings by the Venerable Monks, cutting of Merdeka cake and fellowship. Members and devotees are invited to join us for the Celebration. To encourage our members’ children to strive for excellence in their academic performance, SJBA will present Academic Excellence Awards to students who excelled in their examinations in 2013. The Awards will be given out on Merdeka Day, 31st August 2014. On the same day, SJBA is also organizing a Blessings Service for students sitting for UPSR, PMR, SPM, STPM, etc. examinations this year. The Blessings will be conducted by the Venerable Sangha Members.

2) SJBA is hosting a Dhamma Talk “The Importance of Practising Daily Meditation” by Sayalay Susila, on 30 Aug 2014, Saturday, 8.30pm to 10pm. Sayalay Susila, a Malaysian, was ordained in 1991. She has practiced meditation intensively, under the guidance of various famous meditation teachers like Sayadaw U Pandita, Pa Auk Sayadaw, etc. She has also learned the Abhidhamma, ancient discourses and the Pali language from Pa Auk Sayadaw. Sayadaw Susila travelled extensively to teach meditation, the Abhidhamma and Sutta expositions.

3) In conjunction with the Mid-Autumn Festival, SJBA is organizing a Mooncake Family Night on Saturday, 6th September 2014. It will be a fun-filled night to celebrate with your family, especially so if you have young children as SNOWBALL THE CLOWN is around to entertain you with magic show and ventriloquism with his puppets. And in line with SJBA’s effort in promoting a caring and compassionate community, we are inviting underprivileged children from Ti-Ratana Welfare Society to join us in our celebration. These 40 underprivileged children have provided us with a wish-list. So all members and devotees who want to fulfill their dream, please contact Sis Lily at 03-56348181 / 56315299 for the items they have wished for. Last but not least, remember to bring your lantern along for the traditional lantern procession round the temple to end the night. DINNER WILL BE

4) SJBA is organising an Intermediate Course on Buddhism from 19 September to 24 October 2014. The course will run for 6 consecutive Fridays from 8.30pm to 10.00pm and will be conducted by Uncle Vijaya, Bro Charlie Chia and Dr Chan Kah Yein. 5) In conjunction with the 3-month Vassa, Venerable Dhammapala will be conducting a Pali Sutta learning and Chanting in Pali & English on Tuesdays (except 12 Aug and 16 Sep) until 7 October 2014, 8.30pm to 10.00pm. All are welcome.

6) The Metta Class in Mandarin conducted by Ven. Dhammapala will be on every Friday, 8pm to 10pm.

7) SJBA is hosting a Dhamma Talk in Mandarin by Bro Leong Kok Hing related to Buddhist Stamps, on 21 Sept, 1.30pm to 3.30pm. Bro Leong has previously served as the President and Secretary of YBAM for 16 years. He has held many portfolios in Buddhist societies such as the Chief Editor of Buddhist Digest, the Assistant Secretary of World Fellowship of Buddhist Youth, Fo Guang International Youth Director, Vice Principal of International Buddhist College and etc. At present, he is managing General Affairs of International Buddhist College and Phor Tay Chinese Secondary School in Penang. He was conferred with the Excellent Youth Award and Youth Leader Award from the Ministry of Youth. He has been collecting stamps which has Buddhist themes for 30 years. In the eighties, his stamps have been displayed in some major Buddhist exhibitions in Penang and Kuala Lumpur with “Buddhist Travel”as its theme. He was also invited for his solo in 1990, 1992 in Fo Guang Temple at Singapore and Taiwan.

8) SJBA is sponsoring Ven. Punnavisuddhi to study his Degree & Masters in Pali at a University in Sri Lanka, RM7,000 per year for 5 years for a total of

9) Subang Jaya Buddhist Association is co-organising with the Bodhinyana International Foundation, Australia and the Centre of Mindfulness Limited, Hong Kong, the 1st Buddhist Nuns’ Novitiate Programme in the Theravada Tradition on 7–16 November 2014, under the guidance of Bhikkhuni Hasapanna, Venerable Dhammapala with Ajahn Brahm as the Spiritual Director. This Program will be sponsored by SJBA and the Hong Kong Society of Dhamma Supporters but donations towards the costs of running this Novitiate Programme will be most appreciated. 10) Today’s (24/8/14, Sunday) Dhamma Talk in Mandarin (at 11.30am) is on “Meeting With the Dhamma” by Ven. Dhammapala. Ven. Dhammapala graduated in Pali and Buddhist Studies from the University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka and received his Doctorate from the University of Hong Kong. He has been lecturing in the University of Hong Kong and has presented a number of papers. He is currently the Spritual Director of Buddhistdoor. Vice Chairman of the Hong Kong University Centre of Buddhist Studies Alumini Association and Director of a few Buddhist-based organisations. 今天 (24/8/14, 11.30am) 的讲题是与佛法相会, 讲师是法护法师. 法师毕业于斯里兰卡的Kelaniya大学,专注于巴利文和佛教研究。法师也在香港大学获得了博士学位,也在香港大学当过讲师,并呈列了一些论文。他目前是 “Buddhistdoor” 佛门的精神理事。是香港大学, 佛学校友会中心的副主席。也是其他以佛教为基础的组织的理事主任

11) This morning’s (17/8/14, 10.00am) Dhamma Talk in English is on “Looking Deeper into the Kalama Sutta (Buddhist Charter of Free Inquiry) by Dr. Chan Kah Yein. Sis Kah Yein holds a PhD in Mathematics Education. She is the founder of AnimalCare, a charity which provides neutering and vaccination subsidies for street animals. To date, she has written 8 books for
free distribution. Kah Yein believes in embracing simplicity and traveling light in life.
